Who doesn't love a good pedicure?

Katie at the auction in Pennsylvania, terrified of the unknown.

Katie and barn cat, Rambo.

Meet Katie!

Katie and her pal Ben were once Amish horses in Pennsylvania. Years ago, they were both discarded by the Amish at a notoriously dangerous auction in PA, known for its sealed fate for many of the horses there: slaughter. Katie fiercely guarded Ben, allowing no one near him. They were both terrified. Thankfully, we were able to step in at the last minute (literally!) and save these two before they were to be transported to Canada. Two amazing volunteers made the trek from Illinois to Pennsylvania to bring them back to us. Ben was very sick, and Katie was very timid and shy. Both had been severely abused by their previous owners.

Flash forward to today, Katie is working through her past traumas by learning to trust humans again. We are so thankful for volunteers who have worked with Katie over the years, changing her from a horse who cowered in the back of her stall nervously to one who is now blossoming more and more every day. She used to be terrified at the sound of a carrot snapping, most likely because someone in her life harshly used whips on her. She has come SO far, and we are so shocked to see how much she trusts people after what was done to her!
